855,000 cleared to vote abroad in 2024 general elections

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) says that 855,000 people have registered to vote in the 2024 general elections. Of these, 273,000 live in New York, or 35% of the registered Dominicans.

The JCE says that the voting roll will close on 21 January 2024.

Dominican voters abroad are divided in three foreign districts.

The announcement was made by Roman Jaquez Liranzo, president of the JCE, when in New York for the signing of an agreement with the New York City Police Department.

Jáquez Liranzo highlighted the significance of the signing of this agreement, on the eve of the general elections of May 2024 and a possible second electoral round.

The agreement establishes, among its fundamental objectives, aspects in the areas of cooperation against crimes and offenses that affect identity. The agreement provides for academic training in levels of reciprocal security and the patrolling by the New York Police in the surroundings of the electoral precincts.

“It is a step forward that this administration has taken, and I thank the NYPD for coming to the Dominican Republic to sign inter-institutional cooperation between the JCE, which is sovereignty and democracy,” Jáquez said at the signing of the agreement.
