
The director of the Center for Emergency Operations, Juan Manuel Mendez said on 2 January 2024 that there were 38 deaths reported over the Christmas and New Year holidays – 23 December to 1 January 2024.
Méndez said most of the cases were recorded in the province of Santo Domingo with 19.8%, the National District and Puerto Plata (6.4%) and Santiago and San Pedro de Macorís with 5.2%.
He said that 27 of the 38 deaths were in accidents involving motorcycles (71%).
In the first phase of the road safety operation, from Friday, 22 December through Monday, 25 December 2023, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) had reported 19 persons died in traffic accidents during the Christmas holidays. COE says that most of the dead were involved in crashes with motorcyclists.
In the second phase of the road safety operation, from 30 December to 1 January 2024,
122 traffic accidents were recorded, of which 78 involved motorcycles, 28 light vehicles, 3 minibuses, for 19 deaths. Motorcyclists were involved in 13 of the 19 fatalities.
The authorities reported that within the framework of the operation the provinces with the most cases were Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, San Pedro de Macorís, Santiago, Monseñor Nouel and La Vega.
