Medics to decide whether or not to operate Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez

Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez remains stable and is receiving treatment for pain control after being admitted to the Advanced Medicine and Telemedicine Diagnostic Center (CEDIMAT) after suffering a fall that resulted in femur fracture. In 2020, the prelate was operated of the hip.

On Thursday, 4 January 2024 the team of doctors that is treating him will meet to decide whether to operate or not, Dr. Jorge Marte Baez, medical director of Cedimat told Listin Diario. The 87-year-old patient suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

Given the situation, the bishop of the Diocese of Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia, Jesús Castro Marte, asked for the prelate’s speedy recovery. “United with Cardinal López Rodríguez at this moment. We all join in praying for his speedy and satisfactory recovery. God and the Most Holy Mary support this faithful servant of the House of the Lord,” Castro Marte wrote on his X account (former Twitter).

Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez retired from being the archbishop of Santo Domingo, the highest of the Catholic Church for Dominican bishops, in 2016 after serving for 36 years. Pope named Francisco Osoria to the position. When Lopez Rodriguez dies, the Roman Catholic Church will need to appoint a new cardinal for the Dominican Republic.
