Free meds for diabetics

President Luis Abinader announced free medicines for those 45 years or older who suffer from diabetes and hypertension and are affiliated with the government health plan (Senasa) under the subsidized regime. These persons do not contribute to the system.

The free meds plan also covers government retirees and minors that have diabetes.

The government estimates this population at around 2 million persons.

The meds will be available by prescription through government primary care clinics physicians as of the second week in February 2024. The drugs will be available by prescription through Promese-Cal, the government-subsidized pharmacy. The funds were allocated in the 2024 National Budget.

President Luis Abinader urged people to exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle.

During the presentation, Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera said 32% of the Dominican adult population is overweight.
