The Dominican Liberation (PLD) and Democratic Option (OD) parties made an alliance agreement official on Tuesday, 9 January 2024 at the municipal and congressional levels in time for the municipal election in February and the congressional election in May 2024.
Minou Tavarez of Opcion Democratica announced the pact contemplates 92 candidates for mayor, 137 for municipal district directorates, and 17 senatorial positions. Tavarez is a former deputy for the PLD. She resigned from the party in 2014 during the first Danilo Medina presidency.
The organizations expressed that the agreement seeks to strengthen the democratic system with better candidates.
The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) is backing Santiago Mayor Abel Martinez for President. Opcion Democrática is supporting Virginia Antares Rodriguez for President.
Highly vocal Jose Horacio Rodriguez, brother of Virginia Antares, has explained the alliance seeks to secure more slots in Congress to enhance the party’s positioning and break the majority of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party. Jose Horacio Rodríguez was the most voted candidate when he won the deputy seat in Congress in 2020, running for Alianza Pais. Alianza Pais chose to ally with the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) into the 2024 general elections.
