President Abinader vetoes bill to amend Chamber of Accounts

On 5 January 2024, the Executive Branch returned the bill that amends the five-member Chamber of Accounts operating rules to the National Congress via the Chamber of Deputies.

Work in the Chamber of Accounts (CCRD) is very much at a standstill. The present ruling calls for a majority vote and has impeded actions taken by the incumbent president to further combat corruption.

The bill amending the Chamber of Accounts was approved in Congress in July 2023 and was sent to the Presidency for enactment.

The Presidency now proposes several changes to the bill. The bill seeks to reduce internal conflicts in the government body that audits the government.

In a letter addressed to the president of the Chamber of Deputies Alfredo Pacheco (PRM National District), President Luis Abinader observed 12 articles. He proposes granting more power to the Chamber of Accounts (CCRD) president, regulating that power and specifying new infractions and more sanctions to avoid confrontations between the five members of the plenary session.
