
President Luis Abinader withdrew from Congress the bill that would establish zero import taxes on several agriculture products. Several sectors had said the bill would cause adverse effects to local producers that have higher costs than the imported goods. Imported sugar had been exempted from the bill. The bill authorized the Ministry of Agriculture to decide who could import.
The president of the Dominican Association of Milk Producers (Aproleche), Eric Rivero said the President’s decision came after producers met with him at the Presidential Palace. Rivero is an advisor to the President on agricultural matters.
The bill was still pending a final reading in the Chamber of Deputies.
The piece sought to free from import taxes basic basket products in cases of emergencies.
Opposition deputy Jose Horacio Rodriguez (Opcion Democratica-National District) had been vocal speaking up against the bill and congratulated the President for listening to the farm advocates.
