
The Ministry of Tourism announced that 2023 closed with a record number of 10,306,517 visitors. The breakdown was 8,058,670 by air and 2,247,847 by cruise ship. This is the first year more than 10 million visitors are received.
During the presentation of the monthly statistics, the Ministry of Tourism highlighted the ongoing work to bolster new and old destinations. The focus in 2023-2025 is on the Colonial City, Miches, Puerto Plata’s Bergantin and Cabo Rojo, Pedernales.
The Ministry of Tourism announced that the Colonial City is undergoing US$100 million in renovation works. Several streets are being intervened and the results will be seen later in 2024 and 2025. The Colonial City in the National District is known for its colonial-era architecture and centuries-old buildings, small streets and major museums.
The Ministry is also promoting the Miches beaches destination, north of Punta Cana, where around 3,000 accommodation units are under construction. Six international chains are involved, including Four Seasons, which is building a luxury development on Playa Esmeralda.
Ongoing in 2024 also is the development at Punta Bergantin, in Puerto Plata. Around 4,000 hotel rooms are in development, combined with a movie studio, academics and property for sale.
And the focus is on the start of mass tourism for Pedernales in the southwest, with the arrival of the first cruise ship to the Cabo Rojo Port on the last week of December. Mass tourism resorts are under construction in the Pedernales area.
