China agrees to help Dominican agriculture

Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz signed a memorandum of understanding with his Chinese counterpart, Tang Ren Jian on Tuesday, 16 January 2024 for agricultural technical cooperation and support. The Chinese high-ranking agriculture officer is visiting.

Among the topics included in the memorandum are the strengthening of rice production, aquaculture (breeding of aquatic species) and farm modernization.

This is the first visit to the country by a Minister of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China. Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz says the visit is “ a great opportunity to continue strengthening ties of brotherhood with China and thus expand the modernization of our agricultural production.”

China is a world agricultural leader, producing rice, wheat, tomatoes and soybeans. In addition, the nation is a world leader in manufacturing tractors, combined harvesters and other heavy equipment that facilitates agricultural work.

The Chinese ambassador to the DR Chen Juning participated in the meetings held with government officers. Cooperation plans for the rice industry were discussed.

The Ministers of Agriculture of China, Tang Ren Jian, and of the Dominican Republic, Limber Cruz, led a Chinese mission that visited the Rice Biotechnology Agency (Bioarroz), to share experiences about rice production. The director of Bioarroz, Cristino Durán spoke about the importance and impact of the rice sector in the Dominican Republic.
