Electoral updates: No debates yet; working out the kinks with the vote devices

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) carried out on Saturday, 20 January 2024, its second test run for the 18 February 2024 nationwide municipal election. The results are yet to be known. A first run revealed several kinks that are expected to have been resolved.

The National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) is still trying to organize televised debates of the main contender candidates for the municipal (18 February), and the legislative and presidential elections (19 May 2024).

Meanwhile, in the National District, Carolina Mejia is on the campaign trail, having just recently launched her I Love Santo Domingo campaign.

Abel Martinez, presidential candidate for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and incumbent Mayor of Santiago, campaigned in the capital city to back PLD and Fuerza del Pueblo candidate Domingo Contreras.

President Luis Abinader took advantage of his visit to Higuey for the La Altagracia Day religious activities to support Karina Aristy, the many-times former mayor of Higuey who seeks to return to the position, now with the backing of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

This year, citizens get to vote for their councilors in city governments separately from the political parties, but little information is going out yet to tell citizens who the candidates are. With the election set for 18 February, the information should start to flow just in time.

The JCE is asking citizens to verify where they are assigned to vote.
