The negligence of the Ministry of Environment, the Attorney General Office and the State Assets Agency resulted in the legal system advances of the company that is demanding ownership of 70% of the lands of the Sierra Bahoruco National Park. There is proof the company purchased the lands after the park was declared, but when the case went to court, the government did not present the proofs to counter the claims, giving the advantage to the company, El Caribe reports.
Given the negligence of the Dominican government, the Coalition for Protected Areas intervened, bringing the matter to the open. The Coalition is now taking the case to its third hearing in the Superior Administrative Court.
The Coalition says this is the same group that attempted to take over the Cortunama Park in the East in 2009. The business people seek to get away with a claim by taking advantage of the negligence of the Dominican government. Nelson Pimentel of Soeci, a member of the Coalition for Protected Areas, explained on Esta Noche con Mariasela that after the Coalition got involved, the Ministry of Environment is taking action. The gains the claiming company had obtained are now being appealed. Pimentel explained that this occurs because there have not been consequences for those who have attempted similar fraud in the past.
