Total exports drop in 2023 impacted by declining gold values and collapse of exports to Haiti

Exports in 2023 were down 3.6%, according to the Export and Investment Center (ProDominicana).

Between January and December 2023, total exports were RD$11.93 billion, about RD$448.2 million less than in 2022, when exports reached RD$12,38 billion.

In December 2023, the executive director of the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana), Biviana Riveiro, director of Pro Dominicana said that the collapse of values of gold and ferronickel caused the decline. Values of gold shipments to international markets fell by 14.7% in 2023.

Gold carries much weight in Dominican exports. Gold values ranked first in 2023 at RD$1.13 billion dollars, for a share of 9.45% of total exports.

Ferronickel exports were equivalent to US$440.55 million in 2022, representing 3.78% of Dominican national exports.

Dominican exports were also affected by the collapse of exports to Haiti after the shutdown of the border trade in September 2023 due to the construction in Haiti of a canal that would affect farms in the Dominican Republic.
