
In an interview carried in Listin Diario on 31 January 2024, the president of the Latin American and Caribbean Development Bank (CAF), Sergio Díaz-Granados spoke of how the Dominican Republic is well positioned to meet the challenges such as geopolitical conflicts,. increases in raw material prices, the economic slowdown and the need for energy transition and greater social inclusion.
“Regarding the challenges that lie ahead, it is no secret that the Dominican Republic and the other countries of Latin America and the Caribbean face the great challenge of supporting potential growth in the coming years, to reverse the accumulated social losses and preserve the rich biodiversity of the region; all with limitations, growing social pressures and an increasingly adverse global context,” Diaz Granados has acknowledged.
“The world needs climate and food solutions, and the Dominican Republic has the biodiversity and talent to offer them,” he said.
Moreso, he highlighted the upcoming CAF board of directors meeting set for 7 March 2024 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The meeting will be held concurrently with the Annual Assembly of the Inter-American Development Bank that will also be meeting in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Diaz Granados explained the ministers of economy from CAF member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean will be meeting in Punta Cana to analyze development projects and reflect on the region. He mentioned that for the first time in history, the Dominican Republic will preside over the CAF board for one year.
Diaz Granados also announced the opening of a CAF representative office in Santo Domingo that will join the CAF Tourism Agency, which has been operating in the Dominican Republic since 2023. “In this way, we can say that 2024 will be an precious opportunity to strengthen ties between the bank and the Dominican Republic, a country essential for the well-being of the Caribbean and the entire region,” observed Diaz Granados.
