In a historic move, the Dominican Republic has partnered with the US to strengthen tourist safety measures. Tourism Minister David Collado signed the agreement that is endorsed by the US Consulate, Tourist Police (Politur), and the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores).
The agreement establishes a robust framework for managing incidents involving US citizens, ensuring the swift exchange of information between the parties. It also mandates training for hotel staff and security personnel to preempt and manage potential security issues within the tourism sector.
47% of tourist arrivals to the Dominican Republic came from the US in 2023, up 22% from the previous year. US travelers lead in foreign arrivals to the Dominican Republic.
US Consul General Greg Segas highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of the over two million American tourists who visit the Dominican Republic annually.
A critical aspect of the memorandum is the focus on training hotel staff and security personnel. This initiative aims to equip them with the necessary skills to identify and mitigate potential threats, thereby enhancing the overall safety and security of tourists. The training programs will cover various topics, including risk assessment, incident response, and crisis management.
The agreement also establishes clear protocols for handling incidents involving US citizens. These protocols ensure that all parties are aware of their roles and responsibilities, streamlining the incident management process and minimizing any potential delays or misunderstandings. The prompt exchange of information between the parties is another cornerstone of the agreement, facilitating effective communication and coordination in the event of an incident.
Tourism Minister Collado reiterated the Dominican Republic’s commitment to tourist safety during the signing. He stated: “The safety and well-being of our visitors are of paramount importance. This agreement is a testament to our unwavering commitment to ensuring that the Dominican Republic remains a safe and welcoming destination for all.”
