Former three-time President Leonel Fernandez told Diario Libre in an interview published on Thursday, 15 February 2024 that there is no sure winner of the capital city vote. Neither of the two political coalitions or the large media groups have published results in January or February by a major polling company on the municipal votes.
In its edition at the close of the municipal campaign on 15 February 2024, Diario Libre publishes what it calls “the electoral mathematics of Leonel Fernandez.”
“The electoral mathematics of former President Leonel Fernández gives a technical tie between the opposition candidates, Domingo Contreras, and the ruling party candidate, Carolina Mejía, in the National District. His numbers, he assures, come from an electoral tracking poll from the morning of 14 February 2024,” reports Diario Libre.
Fernandez said that candidate Domingo Contreras has a considerable qualitative advantage over his rival, the incumbent mayor who is seeking reelection. He bases this advantage on the many years of municipal experience of the candidate who leads the opposition united under Rescate RD alliance – People’s Force (FP), Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).
The PRM won 113 muncipalities of 158 in the 2020 municipal elections. The People’s Force of Leonel Fernandez, running for the first time in 2020, only has three mayor seats. Fernandez forecast the Rescate RD ally, the PLD, would win Santiago, the country’s second-largest city.
The interview with Fernandez also reveals that the party’s candidates have improved their positioning in North and West Santo Domingo and in the East Santo Domingo where he says many voters rejected the campaigning with drones that positioned the logo of the PRM and campaigned for PRM candidate Dio Astacio in the skies smack in the middle of the Juan Luis Guerra concert at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday, 10 February 2024. An estimated 50,000 fans were at the concert.
The Juan Luis Guerra production distanced itself from the propaganda that distracted fans from the actual concert. Dio Astacio, running for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is the candidate to most likely have carried out the most aggressive campaign to win Santo Domingo East, with a population of 1.029 million, similar to that of the capital city.
