Opposition parties demand their campaign allotments

Opposition parties are protesting that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) has not disbursed the allotted funds in time for the 18 February municipal campaign.

Noticias SIN reports that eight days after the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) requested the Ministry of Hacienda to release the allotted funds for the political parties, the party organizations had not received these funds for their campaigns.

Noticias SIN explains that the opposition parties see the situation as a disadvantage compared to the ruling party since, with less than a week for the actual voting, the opposition political organizations had only received half of the 0.50 percent of the funds corresponding to them by law. Politics in the Dominican Republic is heavily funded by taxpayer money.

Reportedly, the president of the Central Electoral Board, Román Jáquez Liranzo sent a communication in this regard to Hacienda Minister José Manuel Vicente in response to the formal request made by the Fuerza del Pueblo PLD and PRD parties, among others.
