Nearshoring brings Japan’s Kazaki auto parts manufacturer to Santiago

Kazaki, the world’s 13th-largest auto parts supplier is setting up manufacturing in Santiago de los Caballeros, announced Minister of Industry & Commerce Victor (Ito) Bisonó. The Japan-headquartered company will invest an initial US$90 million in the manufacturing plant that will go up in a Santiago export free zone park.

Among other parts, electrical wires for carmakers in the United States will be made in Santiago.

The company expects to employ 1,200 workers in its first phase.

The company announced initially the factory will have 12,000 square meters, with capacity to be expanded to 100,000 square meters.

This is the first auto parts factory to operate in an Dominican export free zone and could well mark the start of a strong new category for Dominican exports.
