Update on the border with Haiti

The Presidency and Ministry of Defense of the Dominican Republic say the situation is calm and under control on the Dominican side of the border as Haiti is now under curfew with the whereabouts of Prime Minister Ariel Henry unknown. The gangs that control most of Haiti seek to oust Henry from government and complete their control of the country.

The Voice of America of the United States says the whereabouts of Henry, were not known on Monday, three days after he signed a bilateral accord in Kenya to pave the way for a possible multinational force to help restore security in Haiti.

Haiti’s government declared a 72-hour state of emergency on Sunday, 3 March 2024, after an intense battle between the country’s police against powerful armed gangs over the weekend, including the release of almost 4,000 prisoners from the Port-au-Prince jail on Saturday, 2 March.

Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, the Minister of Defense Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa began a three-day tour to patrol the border checkpoint areas and has said all is calm at the border. The border with Haiti is about 400 km.

The worsening of the situation, nevertheless, continues to impact legal trade between both countries, a mainstay for border inhabitants.

President Luis Abinader said during his weekly press conversation on Monday, 4 March from the Presidential Palace that special measures have been taken at the border that he does not reveal for security reasons. He said the National Security Council is permanently in session to deal with the situation at the border. The border gates are closed. Flights between the DR and Haiti are canceled.
