It’s that dreaded phrase: Tax reform

Minister of Economy Pavel Isa Contreras / Acento

At the business forum hosted by the InterAmerican Development Bank (IADB), that dreaded term of a tax reform was once more on the table, and the top echelons of Dominican financial agencies were there to comment.

Economy Minister Pavel Isa Contreras said: “The country needs a tax reform, but this is not the time to talk about it.” Presidential and congressional elections are set for 19 May 2024. Minister Isa Contreras said that as of 16 August 2024, when a new administration has been sworn in, tax law amendments will be discussed.

Tax reform in the Dominican Republic is equated with more taxes for those who pay taxes. A panel on Esta Noche con Mariasela discussed tax reform this past week and focused on how the base could be extended and less corruption and more efficiency in government use of taxpayer money be required.
