President Luis Abinader inaugurated on Sunday, 17 March 2024 the first 4km stretch of the Santiago skylift. The skylift seeks to bring new mobility to the congested center of Santiago city.
The skylift opens to the general public on Monday, 18 March with free transportation to Santiago commuters throughout an adaptation period.
The Presidency reported RD$6.5 billion has been invested in the mass transit system that will directly impact around 74,000 inhabitants who commute to nine of the most populated sectors in the second largest city in the Dominican Republic.
The Santiago Cable Car is part of the Santiago Integrated Transportation System (SIT-Stgo), an initiative that will eventually integrate different modalities of public transport allowing for single fares. The government is incorporating sustainable mobility alternatives that reduce the impact on the environment and enhance quality of life in Santiago.
Construction on the cable car had officially begun in September 2021.
The Santiago Cable Car is a cable transport system composed of 129 detachable cabins with the capacity to transport 4,000 passengers per hour and in each direction or 64,000 people a day.
The first section of the system covers four kilometers and travels from the La Yagüita del Pastor sector to the Las Carreras Central Terminal in Pueblo Nuevo, with 4 stations: E1: Central Station, E2: Emiliano Tardif Station, E3: Renée Klang de Guzmán Station and E4: Yolanda Santana Station. Its complete tour is done in 10 minutes.
