The Central Electoral Board (JCE) is hoping to receive upwards of RD$2 billion that the central government has pending for distribution to political parties. The funds are alloted to be distributed 20% to three dozens of small political parties, and 80% to four named majority parties – the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), the People’s Force (FP) and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). Congress years ago legislated to generously fund political activities in the Dominican Republic.
The funds will be available at a time when in an unprecedented situation President Luis Abinader enters the final weeks before the election at a high 60%+ rating to repeat in the Presidency. The presidential and congressional election is scheduled for Sunday, 19 May 2024.
Opposition parties hope to receive the funds to rev up the enthusiasm of their followers who did not show for the 18 February 2024 municipal election that was swept by the candidates of the ruling PRM.
