Commerce as mainstay of economic activity in 2023; sector hires many but pays low wages

Commerce, both wholesale and retail, represented the largest economic activity and the largest formal employer of workers during 2023. This activity contributed 32.1% of the economic activity in the Dominican Republic, according to recently released statistics from the National Statistics Office (ONE).

Men hold 60% of the jobs in the sector. The bad news is that the commercial sector is in the 14th position when it comes to salaries, with an average monthly salary of RD$18,700.

For close to a decade, the ONE notes that stores are a third of all the companies in the country. Last year, there were 113,000 formal companies in the country, a 7% increase from the previous year. The commerce sector employs nearly 387,000 persons, the second largest number of persons with formal jobs.

Public administration and defense constituted the very largest number of formal job holders, with over 633,000.
