President Luis Abinader was in Santiago for the formal inauguration of the US$108 million HOMS Health & Wellness Center. The new 51,000 sq meter extension to the Homs Hospital incorporates mayor advances in health care and is a step forward in the positioning of Santiago as the capital of medical tourism in the Dominican Republic. The HOMS Health & Wellness Center now is a medical center, hotel and convention center complex.
The Dominican Republic has become the leading medical tourism destination in the Caribbean. The Abinader administration has made available attractive financing and terms for private investors to renovate, expand and install the new centers. It is documented that tourists entering for medical tourism spend much more than the regular leisure tourists.
During the inauguration, President Abinader spoke of the importance of diversifying and how medical tourism is a way to diversify in tourism.
Vice President Raquel Peña, Public Health Minister Víctor Atallah and Tourism Minister David Collado also attended and were hosted by the HOMS Board of Directors, chaired by Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español.
The new wellness center is located at the southern entrance to Santiago and is 10 minutes from Cibao International Airport and just steps from the Santiago Metropolitan Hospital (HOMS). The center merges a professional tower for medical specialties, with a hotel and a convention center.
The 13-story professional tower of medical specialties has 167 offices with state-of-the-art equipment, private waiting rooms, sample collection area and lactation rooms on each level. The medical practices include consultations for dentistry, anti-aging and aesthetic medicine, a sleep unit, microbiota study, metabolic surgery, among others.
The on-site Residence Inn by Marriott has 115 extended-stay rooms, available for health and wellness travelers, business and leisure tourists. The hotel has a swimming pool area and a Sky Lounge with a 180-degree view, for those who want to appreciate the view of the country’s second-largest city from above.
In 2022, the HOMS received international accreditation for health services from Accreditation Canada (ACI) in the gold category.
