The House of Bernarda Alba (La casa de Bernarda Alba) continues at the Manuel Rueda Hall of the National Music Conservatory on Av. Cesar Nicolas Penson in Santo Domingo.
The legendary play by Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca tells the story of women in the villages of Spain. It centers on the events of a house in Andalusia during a period of mourning, in which Bernarda Alba (aged 60) wields total control over her five daughters Angustias (39 years old), Magdalena (30), Amelia (27), Martirio (24), and Adela (20). The housekeeper (La Poncia) and Bernarda’s elderly mother (María Josefa) also live there.
The performance opened last week to much praise with a cast of first-rate Dominican theater actresses including Elvira Taveras, Isabel Spencer, Johanna González, Nileny Dippton, Judith Rodríguez, Paloma Palacios, Lía Briones, Mary Gaby Aguilera and Wendy Alba. The Dominican version of the Spanish play is directed by Maria Castillo. Fidel Lopez is the producer.
Those who enjoy good theater should go early and pick up their tickets for performances on Friday, 12 April and Saturday, 13 April at the Manuel Rueda hall of the Escuelas de Bellas Artes, next door to the National Music Conservatory. Showtime: 8:30pm. Tickets range from RD$1,200 to RD$1,800.
