President authorizes three extraditions

President Luis Abinader signed three presidential decrees that authorized the extradition of three Dominicans who were wanted on different charges in the United States and in France. One of the charges is from Puerto Rico where the person was charged with lewd acts and incest in 2022. Another person was charged with drug trafficking and faced formal charges back in 2021. A third person was charged with armed robbery and murder in Pointe-au-Pitre, Guadaloupe, the French overseas province in the Eastern Caribbean.

President Abinader noted that the 2015 Constitution of the Dominican Republic, in its article 128, grants him the authority to decree the extradition of Dominican nationals to foreign jurisdictions. Sometimes it takes a long time for justice to move in these cases. A case in point is the crime in Guadaloupe which was committed in 2016.

At least two of the most recent extraditions were voluntary, which is to say that the person involved did not object to the process. In all cases, the Dominican government issues the authorization for extradition to face very specific charges in foreign courts of law. No additional indictments are permitted.
