Fitram, the government mass transit developer, has shared an image of what would be a passenger transport circulating on rails and on the surface in urban areas, on the street itself. The system would not require separation from the rest of the car and bus circulation, and would not require a track or reserved section of the road.
The proposed system is planned to start construction in the first half of 2025, with an investment of US$300 million. It would travel from the Sánchez Highway in Haina connecting with the Santo Domingo Oeste Cable Car, crossing the entire Independencia Avenue and along the entire Avenida Winston Churchill, integrating into Lines 1 and 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro.
This project includes a tunnel at Winston Churchill Avenue for the passage of trams and traffic lanes, and would considerably reduce vehicle congestion in the city center.
