Armed robbery at Banco Popular branch in Santo Domingo

The Banco Popular confirmed the robbery of its small branch located on Avenida Gregorio Luperón corner Calle Olof Palme. The robbery took place on 3 June 2024 at around 4:30pm.

The bank reported that no injuries were sustained by either customers or employees.

According to witnesses, four armed men with covered faces burst into the branch. While two of the men subdued the security guard, a third stole an undisclosed amount of money. A fourth robber was waiting in a getaway vehicle, in which the group fled after committing the crime.

The bank is working with the Police to identify and apprehend the robbers.

Banco Popular Dominicano announced that the staff of this branch will receive psychological support from a team of professionals from the institution. The aging security guard was not injured, but was shaken by the incident, as reported in Listin Diario.

The bank has not released the amount of money stolen.

El Dia reports that this is the second time the small branch is assaulted. The first time was on 30 July 2015 when the security guard died of a shot in the head.

The robbery is also the second in less than ten days in the Dominican Republic. A previous bank robbery had occurred on 24 May 2024 at a Banco de Reservas branch in Santiago de los Caballeros.

Jose Marmol, corporate spokesman for the Banco Popular, said that security measures would be stepped up at the banks.
