President Luis Abinader announced several of the actions the government is taking to prepare the country for hurricane season, especially as weather forecasters announce a very active season. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the peak from mid-August to late October. Historically most hurricanes in the Dominican Republic have hit in September with David in 1979 and Georges in 1998 the two worst storms.
President Abinader said that a campaign is being conducted to educate and orient the public about the forecasted weather phenomena and preventive actions to take during the hurricane season. The government has outlined the protocols for evacuations, temporary shelters, and relocations in the main affected provinces.
Operations centers have been determined close to vulnerable disaster areas, for coordinating search and rescue operations, recovery of power lines and emergency communications, and distribution of essential items such as food, medicines, and hygiene kits.
Furthermore, President Abinader said the Centro Nacional de Pronóstico (National Weather Forecasting Center) works around the clock to provide reliable information on weather conditions. A second radar is being installed in Puerto Plata to provide more accurate Cibao and northern region weather forecasting.
President Abinader announced the government is preparing to send out early warning texts to families living in the expected path of a storm, along with recommendations on how to protect themselves and their belongings.
The President said the government has a plan in place for disaster response and recovery and has received support from international organizations like the World Bank.
