The Instituto Nacional de Formación Técnico Profesional (Infotep) announced on 12 June 2024 that it will open a new training center in the city of Barahona. The center will offer a wide variety of training courses to residents of the municipality.
An Infotep press release says that the new center is part of President Luis Abinader’s plan to provide technical and vocational training to all Dominicans. The goal is to have an Infotep center in every municipality in the country. The Barahona center will be located in the Hotel Guarocuya.
On 27 May 2024, Infotep had announced it would not go ahead with the installation of the training center at the Hotel Guarocuya. Now it seems, the impasse with the former operator of the hotel that impeded the installation has been resolved.
“The President of the Republic has instructed us to bring Infotep closer to the people,” said Rafael Santos Badía, director of Infotep. “We currently have 51 centers throughout the country, and there are other centers that are under construction or being remodeled, such as the one in Barahona.”
Santos Badía explained that the project to install a tourism school in the Hotel Guarocuya will become a reality, fulfilling President Abinader’s promise to the people of Barahona. The school will train human resources for the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as technicians for the entire southwestern region.
“Barahona will have its own Infotep training center, where we will be preparing human talent for the South, anticipating the needs of companies and tourist centers, hotels, restaurants, entertainment centers and commercial companies producing goods and services that are emerging and will continue to grow as a result of the investments that are already beginning to be made throughout the area,” he said.
The new Infotep center will offer a variety of courses, including courses in hotel management, restaurant management, tour guiding, culinary arts, bartending, housekeeping, maintenance.
The center will also offer courses in other areas, such as information technology, business administration, mechanics, electricity and construction.
The Infotep center in Barahona is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
