Airport construction in San Juan de la Maguana on schedule

The Dominican Airport Department (DA) reports that the El Granero del Sur Domestic Airport in San Juan de la Maguana province is progressing according to schedule. DA director Víctor Pichardo explains the airport is vital for the economic development of the entire southwestern region.

During a recent inspection tour, Pichardo observed the progress of work on the airfield, including the runway, aircraft parking apron, taxiway, and runway safety areas, as well as the area where the terminal building and the Dominican Republic Air Force barracks will be built.

In addition, he verified the actions being carried out by the Dominican Hydraulic Resources Institute (INDHRI) to relocate existing irrigation canals that are located within the airport grounds.

“Progress has been made as planned,” Pichardo explained. “We can see that in this first stage of the project, work is being carried out on the clearing and filling process for the runway, aircraft parking areas, and the terminal. In the case of the perimeter fence, works are already completed 100%.”

Pichardo says the airport is important for the comprehensive economic and social development of San Juan de la Maguana and the southwestern region. It is expected to have a positive impact on all issues related to agriculture, tourism, national security, public health and rescue operations.

The airport is under construction in the Barranca section located at kilometer 7 of the San Juan de la Maguana – Las Matas de Farfán highway. It occupies a total land area of 705,000 m2. It will have a runway 1,500 meters long by 30 meters wide, an aircraft parking apron of 5,850 m2, plus a terminal building of 1,500 square meters and a FARD barracks of 350 m2, among other facilities.

Accompanying the DA director during the tour were Christien Broberg, director of airport design; Vianca Matos, project supervision manager; and Jorge Leandro Santana, legal director. Also present were engineer Carlos Pérez de Moya, project manager of the El Granero del Sur Domestic Airport, among others.
