The Dominican Republic will be contributing the cost of medical assistance to the MSS staff in Dominican hospitals, Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez announced when wrapping up the present and future contributions to the peace-seeking force in Haiti in his remarks at the UN Security Council meeting on 3 July 2024.
“The incipient progress of the multilateral cooperation that has been strongly denied by critics, but the situation is showing this is the correct path,” he pointed out speaking to the United Nations Security Corps members at the UN headquarters in New York.
In New York, Alvarez also met with Haiti’s Prime Minister Gary Conille and Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy, who were present for the UN Security Council meetings.
In his remarks, Alvarez acknowledged advances made in Haiti with the naming of the prime minister and his cabinet. He said these are entrusted with leading the country on roads of peace and prosperity. He said that while restoring peace and that country’s institutions is up to the people of Haiti and its leaders, the backing of the international community is fundamental.
He praised the leadership of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the efforts of the UN Security Council, the backing of the US that has taken on the greater part of the funding of the new efforts, and the bravery of the government of Kenya in assuming the leadership of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti.
He also acknowledged the mediation of Caricom, through political and diplomatic efforts that have been key to promoting reconciliation in Haiti and coordinating international assistance.
He called for sustained international community help calling on Canada to come through with its commitment to train and equip the mission, as well as the contributions of other countries in a show of international solidarity to help Haiti build a new stable and prosperous future.
Alvarez called for countries that have committed resources to come forward and keep the resources coming in a sustained manner.
“Every minute that passes puts the future of a life in danger,” he reminded his listeners.
He also urged that actions be taken to enforce the UN Security Council resolutions 2653 and 2699 regarding the embargo on arms sales to Haiti and those who back criminal organizations in Haiti.
