Adjunct Prosecutor Mirna Ortiz, who coordinates the litigation for the Specialized Prosecutor for Pursuing Corruption, told reporters that the recent accusatory statements by Major Raul Alejandro Giron Jimenez are backed by documents and other corroborations. The prosecutor stressed the point that these statements were not made by the defendant to simply favor the prosecution’s standing in the case, but rather they were all backed by proofs that will be incorporated into the evidence presented by the prosecution at the First Collegiate Tribunal in the National District.
Giron Jimenez outlined just how the operation that produced RD$4.5 billion for the perpetrators was carried out. He said that the Specialized Corps for Tourists (Cestur) had more than 10,000 people on a payroll, and these, in exchange for the promise of a pension, were required to return their monthly checks to the superior officers.
According to Giron Jimenez, there was no need for any sophisticated computer program. All that was needed was to make sure that those involved were paid off. The major was quite specific in naming names, including that of the prosecuted Major General Adan Caceres, who reportedly took in between 30 and 40% of all of the funds obtained by the Cestur officers.
