City government reacts to journalism story and orders applying the law

In the Dominican Republic there are many laws, but the execution of these is notably weak. In Santo Domingo, the capital city, you can see many signs with traffic orders that nobody seems to respect. In Santo Domingo, too, businesses have taken over the sidewalks and turned streets into extensions of their services.

The city government of Santo Domingo is well known for allowing developers to violate city rules and leaving it up to residents to pursue lengthy legal cases to stop the violations.

Recently, Listin Diario has been reporting on the unchecked practice that has multiplied. After Listin Diario recently reported on how vehicles had taken over an area of the state UASD university for use to park abandoned vehicles and as repair cars. The city government of Santo Domingo decided to take action, at least in time to get some positive press.

The same situation is prominent in several neighborhoods. On Charles Sumner, Gustavo Mejia Ricart avenues, and in many other neighborhoods vehicle dealerships have taken over the streets.

Last week, the National District Mayor’s Office carried out an operation to remove the improperly parked, abandoned, and illegally painted vehicles from the UASD University Zone.

The initiative aims to eliminate junk cars, abandoned vehicles, and those undergoing unauthorized painting processes, which have been contributing to environmental, visual, and noise pollution.
