ATP Challenger tennis in Santo Domingo; US$164,000 in prize money

Tennis lovers are in for a treat as several of Latin America’s best tennis players are in town for the 8th RD Tennis Open, an event on the ATP Challenger 125 Tour. From 11 to 17 August 2024, The competition is bringing together emerging tennis players who vie for their share of US$164,000 in prize money. The games are taking place at the outdoor clay courts of the Santo Domingo Tennis Club (La Bocha) in Arroyo Hondo. Tickets are available on Uepa Tickets.

The ATP Challenger Tour 125 is a level of competition in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour that is one level below the ATP Tour. The ATP Challenger Tour is the biggest tennis event in Latin America. The ATP Challenger Tour 125 is an important part of the tennis calendar, helping to develop the next generation of tennis stars.

The 125K series is a tier of tournaments that offer $125,000 or more in prize money and are designed to provide a pathway for players to progress to the higher levels of professional tennis. These tournaments typically take place on indoor and outdoor hard courts and offer valuable ranking points and prize money to the winners.

The Dominican star player in the event is 23-year old Nick Hardt, ranked 179th in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Playing in an ATP Tour competition in Barcelona, Spain on 15 April 2024, Hardt became the first Dominican to win an ATP tour-level match since 2018. He takes over from Victor Estrella Burgos, the best-seeded Dominican tennis player of all times. Estrella, when 34 years old, is the only Dominican tennis player to be ranked in the top 50 world players.

Hardt was not able to advance as he played Australian Bernard Tomic, formerly ranked 17th in the world. He lost by 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
