Public Health Minister Victor Attallah encourages Dominicans to drink coffee without sugar

Public Health Minister Victor Attallah is urging Dominicans to reconsider their coffee consumption habits. He is recommending Dominicans eliminate added sugar. While most Dominicans enjoy their coffee sweet, Attallah’s recommendation is based on the rising prevalence of diabetes in the country. Coffee gurus and specialists also say sugar overpowers the taste of coffee and challenge people to discover the delicious flavors of pure black coffee.

According to studies conducted by the National Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Nutrition (Inden), 13.45% of the Dominican population suffers from diabetes, and another 9.3% is pre-diabetic. These alarming statistics are attributed to increased consumption of processed foods and sedentary lifestyles.

Minister Attallah aims to promote healthier eating habits by encouraging Dominicans to reduce their sugar intake. Under him, the Ministry of Public Health is working on implementing new labeling regulations for processed foods to make consumers aware of the added sugar content. Already the Ministry of Public Health can show the achievement of having removed the sale of soft drinks and sweetened juices from school cafeterias and meals, working in collaboration with the UN FAO.

As a proponent of functional medicine, Attallah wants people to know that excessive sugar consumption is a major contributor to various health issues.

National and international studies have shown that reducing sugar intake, including in coffee, can significantly improve public health outcomes. While it may take time to adjust to a less sweet taste, the benefits to overall health are substantial. To make the switch, consumers are recommended to gradually reduce the amount of sugar in coffee. Once the real flavors of coffee are discovered and the well-being it brings without sugar, few people will go back to the old habit of sugar and milk/cream.

The next step is to upgrade the quality of coffee consumed, discovering the nuances of the taste of coffee. The Dominican Republic is a major producer of quality coffee.
