As was expected, the membership of the former ruling Dominican Liberation Party(PLD) voted to re-elect former President Danilo Medina to preside that organization for the next four years. The re-election comes at a time when several within the party have been urging for renovation. Medina has been the strongman in the party since he split with former party president and former President Leonel Fernandez over the candidacy for the party in the 2020 presidential elections. Fernandez would split and form his Fuerza del Pueblo, that in the 2024 elections moved up to second place in voter preference.
The PLD went from being the leading political force in the country, winning the elections in 1996-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012, 2012-2016 and 2016-2020, to the country’s third place in the 2024 general elections. The PLD received 1.8 million votes compared to 2.7 million of Fuerza del Pueblo of former President Leonel Fernandez and 6.0 of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
Danilo Medina Sánchez has now been re-elected as president of the opposition Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), after securing 882 votes from the Central Committee members, which represents 67.33% of the total.
His opponent, former senator for Santiago Francisco Domínguez Brito, received 428 votes, amounting to 32.67%.
In the race for the General Secretariat, Johnny Pujols defeated Yvan Lorenzo and José Dantés. Pujols. Pujols will succeed Charlie Mariotti as the party spokesperson.
The election saw participation from over 1,300 Central Committee members and was conducted under the supervision of a delegation known as the Organizing Commission of the X Reinaldo Pared Pérez Congress. Voting took place at the Karate Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
Listin Diario reported that the 51 members of the Political Committee of the PLD will be signed in on 17 November 2024.
