La Vega may not be getting a mayor any time shortly

Media reports are still looking into how to best untangle the situation created after President Luis Abinader chose La Vega mayor Kelvin Cruz to be the Minister of Sports for his second term in government. Cruz had started his term on 24 April 2024 when he was pulled in mid August for the cabinet position.

Diario Libre reports that the proposal for President Luis Abinader to appoint the replacement by decree is not likely to meet legal requirements. The clause included in the newly approved 2024 Constitution to the respect means Congress needs to amend the municipal law. The newspaper reports that opponents say that laws cannot be retroactively applied.

The situation occurred when President Luis Abinader surprisingly pulled a recently elected mayor Kelvin Cruz to be his Minister of Sports and his deputy mayor Amparo Custodia, also resigned.

Opposition parties are calling for a new mayor election in La Vega.
