Sociologist Candido Mercedes has been making appearances to explain the burden the country is undertaking with its increasing number of highly paid government officers. These officers are receiving severance payments and high pensions. Mercedes says this is in violation of the equality provisions in the Constitution.
Recently, he mentioned the high wages of the members of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), revealing that these received severance payments in addition to receiving for life their mega wages as pensions. The privileges are unfair for the majority of government employees that are excluded from these benefits. Those that enjoy the generous pensions are neither restricted from taking other employments in the private sector. Mercedes says this situation needs to be stopped as it is unsustainable for government finances.
He says that each time the Central Electoral Board members are changed, the staff of the outgoing members remain, adding to the cost of the JCE.
Mercedes calls for the continuing of those in the Central Electoral Board who have been highly rated for their job performance in the past four years so that the government can save the burden of the severance payments awarded to these and the pension plans, plus the cost of their staffs.
During an appearance on Esta Noche con Mariasela TV variety show, Candido Mercedes explained the high burden this situation is to public finances. It is probably one of the reasons the government seeks to increase taxation. As of this writing, the video with the interview on ENM with Mercedes had not yet been uploaded to her site.
El Piro (Eduardo Sánchez Tolentino) and Ricardo Ripoll of Somos Pueblo are on a campaign to gather votes to discontinue government financing for political parties at the high levels that are in effect today to reduce wasteful spending.
