Universities come together to provide space for dialogues

The National University Network for the Advancement of Dominican Education (RUNED) announced its interest in providing a platform for identifying and providing alternatives to current social and economic issues. The entity brings together the Catholic Pontifical University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the Pedro Henriquez Ureña National University (UNPHU), the Technological University of Santo Domingo (INTEC), Apec University (UNAPEC), and the Iberoamerican University (UNIBE).

As agents for the spread of knowledge, innovation and critical thinking, the universities are also a very good source for finding solution to current issues facing the nation. The promoters of the dialogue say that the rapid changes in global interests, from economic issues to human rights gives the educational institutions the opportunity to provide spaces for talks that can lead to solutions of these problems because they have the personnel, experience and technical capacity to carry out the research needed to come up with solutions that are adequate for the Dominican Republic.

The universities highlight that a prime example of the importance of the role of the universities is the current issue of a tax reform package that can pass the test of popular opinion and yet provide the necessary funds to the government. The platform provided by the University Network could assist in achieving the needed consensus, and avoiding the heated expressions of disagreement that led, most recently, to the withdrawal of needed tax legislation by President Abinader.
