
In a thrilling finish to the National District Basketball Superior Tournament (TBS), Mauricio Báez clinched its 10th title, tying San Carlos for the most titles won by any team in the tournament’s history. The Villa Juana-based Mauricio Baez secured a hard-fought 93-91 win over Bameso in game 7, marking their second consecutive championship and tying the all-time record held by San Carlos.
This was Mauricio Baez first back-to-back championship.
With just 6.3 seconds remaining in the game, Juan Miguel Suero’s clutch steal and subsequent layup sealed the deal for Mauricio Báez at the Ricardo Gioriber Arias Volleyball Palace. Juan Miguel Suero was named the Most Valuable Player.
The victory on Tuesday, 12 November 2024, provided sweet revenge for the team, that had precisely lost to Bameso in a seven-game series in 2022.
The win did not come easy. Mauricio Báez had to overcome a formidable Bameso team led by the dynamic duo of Jassel Pérez and Víctor Liz. Despite a valiant effort from the opposing team, Mauricio Báez managed to secure the victory.
Mauricio Báez head coach Melvin López celebrated his seventh championship title, surpassing previous record-holders Fernando Teruel and Osiris Duquela. The team dedicated this victory to Teruel.
The Mauricio Báez squad was led by Emmitt Williams who tallied 21 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Richard Bautista contributed 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Gerardo Suero added 18 points and six rebounds. For Bameso, Jassel Pérez finished with a game-high 30 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Víctor Liz chipped in with 18 points, and Fausto Pichardo had 15 points and eight rebounds.
