Senator Omar Fernandez (Fuerza del Pueblo – National District) expressed concern on the increasing number of Haitian women giving birth in the Dominican Republic. Speaking during a recent Senate session, he said recent statistics reveal that in 63 public hospitals nationwide more Haitian women give birth than Dominican women.
He said public hospitals reported 4,027 births to Haitian women, equivalent to births in June and July together in October 2024, coinciding with a peak in deportations.
He said that according to data published by the National Health Service (SNS), births by Haitians increased from being 24% of the total in 2019 to 36% so far this 2024.
The district senator concluded his remarks by calling for unity within Dominican society to confront the growing immigration crisis before it becomes too late. He cited specific examples such as France, Italy, Norway, and southern Spain, where cultural clashes between locals and migrants have led to serious problems and conflicts.
Fernandez said that so far in 2024, there have been 73,343 births registered in public hospitals, of which 25,908 have been to Haitians, as reported in Diario Libre.
“Currently, for every 100 births in the Dominican Republic, 40 are to Haitian women,” said Senator Fernández during a recent speech in the Senate, Diario Libre reported.
The capital’s representative raised concerns about the continuing rise in births among undocumented immigrants, despite a record number of deportations last month.
“In October 2024, we reached record numbers in deportations, but we also saw the highest number of births by Haitian women—4,027 to be exact, the equivalent of the total for June and July combined. This is unsustainable,” he remarked, sounding the alarm over the growing trend.
