In a heartfelt message broadcast across social media and major television networks, President Luis Abinader addressed the nation to reflect on the Dominican Republic’s progress, the challenges overcome, and the ambitious goals his administration is pursuing. The speech, delivered with a festive Christmas spirit, aimed to inspire hope and unity among the people.
The President emphasized that Christmas is a time to reflect on the past and envision a brighter future. “It’s a time to gather with family and remember what truly matters: our people, our roots, our history,” he said, urging the citizens to work together toward a fairer and more equitable Dominican Republic.
Abinader highlighted several key achievements of his government:
Poverty reduction: The government is committed to reducing the national poverty rate to 15% and extreme poverty to below 1%. Initiatives like the Supérate program, which has been transforming lives, are central to this effort.
Education as a priority: The president pointed to initiatives such as Escuelas Abiertas y Activas (Open and Active Schools), as well as health and environmental education programs, which are not only benefiting students but also entire communities.
Economic growth: Key sectors, including free zones, tourism, and exports, have been strengthened. These strategies aim to raise the country’s per capita income to US$15,000 and expand the middle class from 40% to 50% of the population.
Investment in infrastructure: Abinader highlighted major projects, including the Integrated Transport System in the capital and the monorail in Santiago, which is set to make the latter one of the most connected cities in the Americas by 2026.
Zero hunger by 2028: The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eradicating hunger, presenting the goal not just as an aspiration but as a promise backed by concrete actions.
These efforts, the President explained, are all part of a clear objective: to improve the quality of life for Dominicans by ensuring access to clean water, formal employment for 80% of university graduates, and dignified housing.
In his closing remarks, Abinader called for national unity, urging all Dominicans to dream of a country where progress is a right, not a privilege. “This Christmas, let the true gift be the hope for the country we want,” he concluded, wishing all citizens a Christmas filled with love, peace, and unity.
