Recent killing of Police agents while combatting crime have the press focusing on the dangers of the career in law enforcement. National District prosecutor Rosalba Ramos says at least 15 officers have been killed so far this year, as reported in Diario Libre.
Nevertheless, the figure is eight fewer than the 23 officers killed in 2023. Despite recent violent attacks on National Police officers, homicides of uniformed personnel have decreased by 34% in 2024 compared to the previous year. This represents a 25% reduction when compared to 2022.
Ramos emphasized the need for stricter legislation to punish those responsible for killing police officers, especially those in the line of duty. “We hope that there will be legislation that aggravates these types of crimes, because killing a police officer, especially while they are on duty, is very concerning,” she said.
Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful condemned the killings and assured the public that the government will not tolerate violence against law enforcement. She also expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
The National Police chief, Ramón Guzmán Peralta, echoed these sentiments, stating that the institution is deeply saddened by these incidents and offers their condolences to the bereaved families.
To combat rising crime, the government has intensified “Guarantee of Peace” operations, which have led to a 25% reduction in overall crime rates. However, officials acknowledged that crime remains a significant issue in certain areas, particularly Santiago and the Greater Santo Domingo.
