It will not be before March 2025 that the DR gets a new attorney general. The procedures are lengthy and are underway.
Continuing with the procedures, President Luis Abinader led the inaugural meeting of the National Judiciary Council (CNM) on Monday, 13 January 2025 evening to prepare for the actual selecting of the next Attorney General of the Republic and seven Deputy Attorneys General, in line with Law 1-25, which amends the Organic Law of the CNM. The changes were introduced in the 2024 Constitution. The meeting was by digital means.
The announcement was made by the Executive Branch’s legal advisor Antoliano Peralta, who also shared details about the next meeting, set for Wednesday, 15 January 8am. During this session, members are scheduled to approve the working schedule and authorize the CNM president to submit the draft regulation for a 20-day public consultation, as mandated by the new law.
“Once the regulation is reviewed and finalized, it will be put out for public consultation so that anyone who wishes to comment can do so,” Peralta explained.
He also noted that, if the public consultation is approved on Wednesday, the 20-day review period would conclude by mid-February. Afterward, President Abinader will convene another meeting to present the names of the candidates for approval or rejection by the other council members.
Last week, President Abinader signed Law 1-25, amending the 2011 Law 138-11 that governs the CNM. The revised legislation assigns the CNM the responsibility of selecting the head of the Public Ministry, taking into account the requirements set forth in the new Constitution of the Republic.
The CNM is composed of President Luis Abinader; the Presidents of the legislative chambers, Ricardo de los Santos and Alfredo Pacheco; Senator Omar Fernández; Representative Tobías Crespo; President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Luis Henry Molina; and President of the Constitutional Court, Napoleón Estévez.
