Renowned Dominican author and publicist Efraím Castillo has been awarded the 2025 National Literature Prize, as announced by the Corripio Foundation and the Ministry of Culture. The award, granted under Executive Decree No. 72-18, is presented annually to honor outstanding contributions to Dominican literature.
The prize is traditionally awarded on January 26th, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Juan Pablo Duarte, the founding father of the Dominican Republic. Castillo’s selection recognizes his exceptional literary work and his significant contributions to the nation’s cultural enrichment.
The National Literature Prize carries substantial prestige and includes a diploma and a cash award of two million pesos. The selection process is overseen by a distinguished jury composed of rectors from the country’s leading universities, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Dominican Academy of Language, and the Corripio Foundation. Each jury member casts a vote, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation.
Since its inception in 1990, the National Literature Prize has celebrated the works of numerous Dominican authors across various genres, including poetry, fiction, and essays. The award has solidified its position as the most prestigious literary recognition in the Dominican Republic.
In a press conference held at the Manuel Rueda Hall of the Corripio Foundation, José Luis Corripio Estrada, president of the foundation, along with jury members and other foundation representatives, officially announced Castillo as the 2025 laureate.
Established in 1990, the National Literature Prize has been conferred upon some of the Dominican Republic’s most celebrated literary figures, including Juan Bosch, Pedro Mir, Manuel Rueda, Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, José Alcántara, Joaquín Balaguer, and Mateo Morrison.
