Abinader favors significant wage hike for non-sectorized private workers

President Luis Abinader has announced that the government will propose a substantial increase of at least 20% to the minimum wage for non-sectorized private workers. This excludes sectors such as tourism (restaurants and hotels), free zone industries, construction and farming. The last minimum wage increase for this sector was implemented in March 2023, amounting to 19%.

The proposal is set to be presented to the National Salary Committee for consideration when it meets in February.

During his weekly press conference at the Presidential Palace, Abinader expressed his commitment to improve the living standards of Dominican workers. “This is the government’s position, and we will present it at the first tripartite meeting, where, in addition to the government, the employer sector and the union sector will be present,” he stated.

The President indicated that he anticipates a decision on the wage increase to be made as early as February of this year. “I think that in February we should decide on it,” Abinader remarked.

Abinader’s proposal comes amid growing concerns about the rising cost of living and the need to ensure that workers’ wages keep pace with inflation. The President has repeatedly emphasized the importance of social dialogue and collaboration between the government, employers, and unions in addressing labor issues. The President spoke of the importance of a real wage increase, not one later engulfed by inflation and rising prices.
