Dominican Republic has a new attorney general, Appoints adjunct prosecutors

Yeni Berenice Reynoso Gomez was sworn in as the new Attorney General of the Dominican Republic by President Abinader at the Presidential Palace on 24 February 2025. She is a career prosecutor, having served as prosecutor for Santiago and the National District, before this appointment.

The appointment follows a unanimous vote by the National Council of Magistrates (CNM) and marks a shift in how the nation’s top prosecutor is selected, implementing a more transparent and participatory process mandated by a recent constitutional amendment.

Born 25 October 1980 in La Isabela, Puerto Plata, Reynoso Gomez, is renowned for her combative stance against organized crime and administrative corruption. She replaces Miriam Germán Brito, who held the position since August 2020.

Reynoso Gomez’s selection was widely expected due to her strong reputation within the Public Ministry, where she has consistently demonstrated firm action. During her term as adjunct since 2020, she has overseen the filing of cases with thousands of pages of evidence and accusations in the opening of several very publicized cases against corruption in the Medina government. None of these cases have concluded.

During the ceremony, Reynoso Gomez pledged to uphold her duties with honesty and integrity.

Reynoso Gomez is joined by seven newly appointed adjunct prosecutors: Fiordaliza Alduey Mercedes, Emilio Rodríguez Montilla, Isis Duarte, María del Carmen de León, Osvaldo Antonio Bonilla, Iván Féliz, and Fadulia Bethania Rosa Rubio. The adjunct prosecutors will be officially sworn in on 26 February at the Presidential Palace.

The CNM’s secretary, Magistrate Nancy Salcedo, confirmed that all adjunct candidates proposed by President Abinader were approved, with the exception of Felipe Herrera who declined the nomination.

The new procurement process reflects changes to the country’s Constitution and the Organic Law of the National Council of Magistrates (Law 138-11), which aims to strengthen judicial independence. Under the revised system, the President proposes a candidate for Attorney General, who is then subject to confirmation or rejection by the CNM. This process excludes direct presidential appointment and includes the President of the Constitutional Court as a CNM member.

The Attorney General and adjunct prosecutors serve for a two-year period, during which their performance will be evaluated by the CNM for potential ratification or removal.
