Goal for 2028 is to declare DR free of malaria

Minister of Public Health Victor Atallah said the country is working to be able to be declared free of malaria by 2028. He said the designation refers to cases originated in the country.

He explained that the number of inspectors has been increased in vulnerable areas to enhance early detection with rapid tests and reduce the spread. Most cases of malaria enter with Haitian workers. He said the public hospital system is fit to deal rapidly with malaria cases to check and treat the disease.

He announced the short term actions to deal with traffic accidents. He said the new trauma centers are to be able to provide a fast response to increase the survivors of traffic accidents. He said systems are being put in place so that when the patient arrives to the trauma center, a team is waiting for the patient with what will be needed to reduce deaths.

The President recently inaugurated a new trauma center in Azua in the southwest. He said this presents the DR as a country in capacity to respond to situations. In construction are others in La Altagracia in the East and another in Villa Vasquez on the northwest. Previously, specialized trauma centers were only available in Santo Domingo and on Duarte Highway.
