One week after the tragic death of 21-year-old student Aida Nicole Reyes Gómez, her family and friends held a candlelight vigil demanding justice, Listin Diario reports. She was a passenger in a Toyota Prado driven by Juan J. Baldera Custodio. Another unnamed person was also in the vehicle and survived the accident.
The vigil took place at the intersection of Winston Churchill Avenue and Ángel Severino Cabral Street, the site of the fatal accident on 26 February 2025.
The protesters allege the Police is delaying the case and cite possible influence behind the delay. What is known is that the woman who caused the accident is 32-year old Raquel Guzmán Torres. Guzman Torres is under arrest at the Centro del Automovilista. Guzman Torres was driving a Bestune T33. She is the wife of former city councilor for the Social Christian Reformist Party and current adjunct ombusman Ruddy Nelson Frias Angeles. Family members suspect she may be receiving preferential treatment. They also criticized the police response time and ambulance time.
The parents say that there have been delays in delivering the surveillance video of the area.
Diario Libre reported that Guzman Torres had tested with a alcohol level of 0.68 and 0.77, above the 0.50 authorized level for driving after drinking alcohol in both tests that were carried out four hours after the accident after the father of the deceased insisted in the testing.
Carrying signs reading “Justice for Aida Nicole,” the protestors expressed their frustration with the ongoing investigation. Aida Nicole’s stepsister, Leidy, told reporters, “We should be in mourning, not protesting for something that should already be resolved.”
According to witnesses, the accused ran a red light, striking Aida Nicole’s vehicle as she made a left turn with the green light. The impact caused the Toyota Prado to overturn.
The initial court hearing for the accused was suspended after the victim’s family lawyers challenged the Public Ministry for excluding evidence of a blood alcohol test. The father of the deceased also complained that the Digesett did not supply to the Public Ministry the findings of the alcohol test.
