Journalist Katherine Hernandez reports on her Instagram account on Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s capital city, and the advanced plans for a major transformation under the “Comprehensive Plan of Santo Domingo,” a sweeping initiative focused on urban development, sustainability, and improved mobility. Recently unveiled by the Presidency of the Republic and the National District City Hall, the project aims to modernize key infrastructure, expand green spaces, and enhance road connectivity, ultimately creating a more organized and functional city.
Key elements of the plan include the revitalization of the Santo Domingo Malecón (boardwalk) and the ambitious “Santo Domingo del Mar” project. This initiative will feature continuing renovations of the 14 km long Caribbean-sea facing park towards the Paseo 30 de Mayo on the western side and including a 50,000 square meter sports complex with recreational areas and bike paths where the Maharishi school was located.
Additionally, plans call for the construction of the Los Trinitarios Bridge to alleviate traffic congestion in the historic city center, and a marina with a cruise ship port near the Hotel Jaragua, designed to boost tourism and the local economy.
The cruise ship port would be built off the Malecon with a connection to the Colonial City. The port would follow intense works now underway in the Colonial City to prepare the historic district for local and foreign visitations.
In addition, the city is undergoing the upgrading of its sports facilities in preparation for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in summer 2026.
Katherine Hernandez writes that government officials have emphasized the transformative potential of the plan, envisioning a long-term impact on the capital. Mayor Carolina Mejía has highlighted the project as a commitment to the future and quality of life for Santo Domingo’s residents. President Luis Abinader has stressed the importance of inter-institutional collaboration to ensure the project’s continuity for decades to come.
